Scholz's SPD allies demand 'peaceful initiatives' in Russian war - Der Spiegel
The Bundestag members from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have advocated a peaceful settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine
Der Spiegel wrote about this.
"We need a peace initiative from the SPD," Bernd Westphal, Spokesman for the Parliamentary Group on Economic Policy, said, according to members of the SPD parliamentary group in Dresden.
"Human suffering, destroyed infrastructure, and loss of well-being for all must lead to more sensible solutions in the 21st century. The SPD is the party of peace and must give it a push," the social democrat said.
Bundestag deputies from SPD Nina Scheer and Ralf Stegner spoke in the same vein. Stegner demanded that the solution to the problem should not be reduced to the issue of arms supplies, but rather to focus on diplomatic and political ways.
After the meeting, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag, Michael Roth, distanced himself from the statements of his colleagues from the parliamentary group.
"Putin's psychological warfare is aimed precisely at our fears. He wants to divide our societies and delegitimize our support for Ukraine." According to Roth, Putin does not want peace. Therefore, the head of the committee warns against "again falling into Putin's trap through the head of Ukraine."
