Trump contemplates easing sanctions against Russia to end war in Ukraine
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump states he considered easing or lifting sanctions on Russia to end the war in Ukraine
Bloomberg reports.
When asked by a journalist if Trump had ever thought about easing or lifting sanctions against Russia as part of the deal he wants to make to end the war in Ukraine, the presidential candidate answered in the affirmative.
“So what we’re doing with sanctions is we’re forcing everyone away from us. So I don’t love sanctions. I found them very useful with Iran, but I didn’t even need sanctions with Iran so much,” Trump said.
It should be noted that during Trump's presidency in 2017, the U.S. demanded NATO impose sanctions on Russia. That same year, Trump approved new sanctions against Russia for allegedly violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
Additionally, in 2019, Trump signed the defense budget for 2020, which included $300 million in aid to Ukraine and sanctions against "Nord Stream 2."
