Russia trades Ukrainian prisoners of war on black market — ISW
The Russian military sells Ukrainian prisoners of war on the black market to Chechen formations, which then exchange them with Ukraine
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported the information.
It noted that Chechen paramilitary groups buy Ukrainian prisoners of war from other Russian military units on the "black market" for further trade. Then they use Ukrainian prisoners to exchange them for Chechen prisoners held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The Times stated that Chechen units are likely to turn to the black market because Chechens are now mostly serving as police or logistics in the rear areas of Ukraine, where there are fewer opportunities to take prisoners.
The outlet notes that although there are no articles in the Geneva Convention that explicitly prohibit the trade in prisoners of war, this practice likely violates the provision that "no special agreement shall adversely affect the situation of prisoners of war."
"Reports of Chechen units apparently conducting their own POW exchanges with Ukraine suggest that some paramilitary units within the Russian military, like the Chechen Akhmat Spetsnaz units, are likely not included in wider, higher-level Russian-Ukrainian POW exchanges," analysts suggest.
- On February 18, DeepState reported that Russian troops shot 6 captured Ukrainian soldiers who remained in Avdiivka at the Museum ("Zenit") position after the Ukrainian army withdrew.
- Also, a video has recently appeared online showing that Russian troops shot three Ukrainian prisoners of war near Robotyne. The Prosecutor General's Office opened proceedings for violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
