Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was "elected" in May 2024 for his fifth presidential term. The "vote" was also held in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, making both the election and the "elected" individual illegitimate

The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasized this.

"The Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories is not recognized by any civilized country in the world. Elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are a blatant violation of not only the Constitution and laws of Ukraine but also the 1907 Hague Conventions, the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention, the 1994 Memorandum on Security Assurances in connection with Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the 1997 Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, and other international legal acts," the Center stated.

They also noted that European countries condemned these sham elections.

"The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament adopted resolutions on this matter. On May 8, 2024, Ukraine's Central Election Commission issued a resolution stating that the 'results' of the Russian presidential elections are null and void, illegally conducted in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, and therefore, the 'elected' individual is illegitimate," the statement reads.

The Center further added that Putin has held unchecked power in Russia for nearly 25 years, currently serving his fifth presidential term and third consecutive one.

"To allow Putin to remain in office after his second term ended in 2008, the Russian constitution was amended twice, including in 2020, effectively 'resetting' all his previous presidential terms," the Center recalled.

  • American leader Donald Trump stated that trust in Ukraine’s president had dropped to 4%, stressing the need for elections. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded, calling Trump's statement Russian disinformation.
