Starmer to present peacekeeping plan for Ukraine to Trump - media
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will present a peacekeeping plan for Ukraine to U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit to Washington
The Telegraph reported the information.
It is expected that Starmer will describe in detail how European troops will be able to enforce any ceasefire agreement brokered by Donald Trump.
According to sources, the British prime minister will urge Trump to keep American fighter jets and missiles on standby in Eastern Europe to respond with a powerful force if Russia violates the terms of a potantial truce.
“Under the Anglo-French plan, fewer than 30,000 European-led troops will be deployed to Ukrainian cities, ports and other critical infrastructure sites, such as nuclear power stations, far away from the current front lines,” the statement said.
According to the outlet, the mission will rely on “technical monitoring,” including reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, drones and satellites to provide “a complete picture of what is going on.”
In addition, the operation will be backed by sufficient firepower to “monitor and shoot those attacks down” to reopen Ukraine's airspace and allow commercial flights.
Naval patrol vessels will also be deployed to the Black Sea to monitor Russian threats to commercial shipping lanes.
Peacekeeping troops in Ukraine
At the end of January, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed to secure Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities. Later, the president clarified that among the peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, there should be U.S. military personnel.
On February 11, the NYT reported that there are no 200,000 peacekeepers in Europe who could be sent to Ukraine. This is almost three times the size of the entire British army. On the same day, Zelenskyy said that the mission would work if 100,000 to 150,000 European troops were deployed.
According to AP, a group of European countries is secretly developing a plan to send troops to Ukraine. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov had previously confirmed that partners are already working on the idea of a peacekeeping mission.
On February 17, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that he is ready to deploy peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that the country does not rule out sending troops to Ukraine as part of a post-war peacekeeping mission.
