Russia's fiber-optic drone capabilities strengthened in Kursk — Ukrainian major

Major Valeriy Prozapas with the Ukrainian Armed Forces says the situation in the Kursk region has remained stable for several months, but Russian forces are improving their technical capabilities, especially in aerial reconnaissance

He discussed this on Espreso TV.

"The Kursk direction has been stable for months. The Russian military keeps trying to push Ukrainian forces from positions we’ve held for over six months. The fighting continues, and you can see everything on the map. As an active serviceman, I can’t go into details, especially since official media are already reporting on it. What I will emphasize is that the Russians keep upgrading their tech. Their aerial reconnaissance is excellent. Their fiber-optic-controlled drone segment has strengthened significantly. And, as always, they don’t spare their personnel. They also have a clear advantage in frontline aviation, with KABs giving them a strong edge on the contact line. Meanwhile, everyone is caught up in political debates, domestic and geopolitical, but the war is ongoing, I urge you not to forget that," Prozapas noted.

When asked whether geopolitical shifts are affecting Russian tactics on the battlefield, Prozapas said he hasn’t noticed any major changes. He stressed that Russia’s main objective remains the same: the destruction of Ukrainian statehood.

"I haven’t noticed any shifts, maybe others have different views. Since 2022, they’ve adapted their tactics and technology, but their goals remain unchanged. They keep pushing, regrouping, and working toward a single objective: not just fighting the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but erasing Ukrainian statehood altogether. So, whether it’s Trump, Putin, Western leaders, or our own, statements don’t change reality. In war, I’ve learned to value actions over words. And the Russians are acting. The combat map confirms it, shifting for over a year, not in our favor. I’ll keep saying this: focus on that, not on political media battles," Prozapas added.

  • On February 16, reports confirmed that Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian equipment column carrying Soviet flags during an assault in the Kursk region.
  • On February 19, it was reported that Vladimir Putin’s claim that Russian troops had crossed into Ukraine from the Kursk region and launched a large-scale offensive was false.
