He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"In Avdiivka, two Russian brigades were brought to a state of non-combat readiness. About 1,500 Russian invaders were klled and 3,500 wounded. At that time, Russian forces concentrated a large number of reserves in Avdiivka. The battalions came in one by one, there was a so-called queue of battalions. The number of their forces and means that was calculated to enter Avdiivka was clearly insufficient, so the enemy regrouped. We hope that the losses will make it possible to reduce their offensive potential," Borodin said.
Even such losses did not change Russia's offensive. But in general, in this area, it allowed the Ukrainian military to make such an impact that Russian forces had to regroup, he added.
- On the night of February 16-17, in order to avoid encirclement and save the lives of the military, the command of the Defence Forces decided to withdraw units from Avdiivka and move to defence on more favourable lines.
- The commander of the Tavria forces reported that during the retreat from Avdiivka in Donetsk region, "a number" of Ukrainian defenders were taken prisoner by Russia.
- Ukrainian soldiers from the 3rd Assault Brigade inflicted significant losses on the Russian army in the battle for Avdiivka.
- Ukraine's Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said that the decision to withdraw from Avdiivka was the right one and that Ukrainian soldiers now need some weapons and equipment.
