Orban should not be underestimated, he has ambitions and clear plan - expert on Ukrainian-Hungarian relations Tuzhanskyi
Dmytro Tuzhanskyi, Director of the Institute for Central European Strategy, believes that the Ukrainian government should work more with the government of Viktor Orban so that it does not interfere with Ukraine's rapprochement with the EU
He expressed this opinion with Espreso TV channel.
"I do not want to repeat everything that Viktor Orban says. He once said that we should not pay attention to what he says, but rather watch his actions. However, what we should understand is that he has ambitions and a clear plan. So we should not underestimate him. We also need to solve this problem on the part of Brussels. We can't predict him, but we think that he is frivolous and will concede. However, this man has been in power since 2010 with a constitutional majority in Hungary," Tuzhanskyi explained.
The expert emphasized that Ukraine should work to ensure that Viktor Orban does not interfere with Ukraine's rapprochement with the EU.
"Let Viktor Orban stay in power as long as he wants. The main thing is to have him vote in favor of Ukraine's accession to the EU. We shouldn't care how long he stays in power, because it is the choice of Hungarians. Ukraine should work to ensure that he does not interfere with our rapprochement with the EU. That's all. If the Hungarians like his populist fairy tales, it is their choice," he added.
- On November 8, the European Commission recommended starting the process of negotiating Ukraine's accession to the EU.
- Last week, Orban said that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU are not in Hungary's interests and should not be put on the agenda.
- On December 4, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sent a letter to European Council President Charles Michel asking him not to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
