Russia can sustain combat operations for another year or two — Ukrainian Lt. Gen. Romanenko

Ihor Romanenko, founder of Safe Skies over Ukraine and former Deputy Chief of the General Staff, says ending hostilities hinges on supplying Ukraine with weapons, equipment, and ammunition

He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.

“There are different assessments of the current situation and its prospects. Western and Ukrainian experts assess the state of warfare and Russia's current potential, particularly in the economy and defense industry, given the country's transition to a war mode. In this state, Russia can continue to conduct hostilities for another year or two, depending on the intensity,” Romanenko said.

According to him, the intensity of the fighting at the front will depend on the level of support Ukraine receives from its allies in terms of weapons, equipment, and ammunition. He noted that North Korea alone has provided 5 million artillery shells to Russia.

“So, the state and prospects will depend on whether our partners provide assistance that will change the situation or whether everything will remain at the current level. Currently, the situation at the frontlines is difficult. If the situation changes due to extensive assistance, there is an optimistic chance that by the end of next year we can start talking about the transition to negotiations with a strong position of Ukraine to stop the fighting,” Romanenko emphasized.

  • U.S. and UK officials are alarmed by reports that Russia is trading nuclear technology with Iran in exchange for weapons, raising concerns Tehran might ramp up its nuclear production.
