Lithuanian President Nausėda calles on West to break economic ties with Russia: it will be better and easier for everyone
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called on Western countries to follow his example and break economic ties with Russia.
UP shared the news with reference to LRT.
"I think that we have done a lot to make Lithuania more resistant to Russia's energy and economic blackmail. And today, when I look at some other countries in Western Europe, I see a long way that Lithuania has traveled in a slightly longer time," he said.
Nausėda noted that Lithuania has declared itself completely independent of Russian energy carriers, while, for example, Germany is considering various options to save energy in the winter period.
"You can clearly see that a policy that had no illusions about Russia worked much better than the so-called realpolitik, which is now the headache of some Western states. I understand their position, but this once again confirms that Lithuania has followed the right path. And the sooner other Western European countries choose the same path, the better and easier it will be for everyone," he said.
However, the Lithuanian president is convinced that Germany will be able to survive the most difficult "year and a half" and also get rid of dependence on Russia.
"I hope for a long-term vaccination against Russia. In other words, there will be no politicians who in a year or a half will say: we need to strengthen relations (with Russia) again, because Russia seems to have changed or made certain concessions. It is very dangerous to be guided by such illusions," he added.
