Inactive for quarter of century: Ukraine, Moldova restore railway branch bypassing Transnistria
With the launch of the Berezyne-Basarabyask railway connection, trains from Odesa and the ports of Reni and Izmail do not have to cross the bridge over the Dniester estuary, which is constantly attacked by Russian forces.
This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov.
According to Kubrakov, the Berezine-Basarabiaska railway section, which connects Ukraine and Moldova, has been completely renewed, the section has been closed for almost 25 years.
"The restoration of this route has become vital against the backdrop of constant attacks on the bridge across the Dniester estuary by the Russian occupiers. From now on, we have an alternative - the main railway route for connecting Odessa and the Danube ports - Reni and Izmail is reliably connected to the railway connection. We expect that we will be able to achieve the volume of freight transportation in this area on average 10 million tons per year. I am grateful to our partners from Moldova and the relevant ministries for cooperation and working towards results," Kubrakov wrote.
The infrastructure was restored both on the territory of Ukraine and on the territory of Moldova by Ukrainian railway workers.
According to the minister, before the full-scale invasion, they planned to build a road bridge across the Dniester, which should become a key link on the route from Kyiv to Chisinau.
