Germany will provide Ukraine with more weapons - Ambassador Makeyev
Ukraine's ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeyev says that he does not want to put diplomatic pressure on the German government, but wants the country to deliver what it has as soon as possible.
The ambassador said this in an interview with Die Welt.
According to Makeyev, German authorities assured in direct conversation that they would provide more weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. What exactly is to be delivered will be announced later.
When the outlet’s reporter asked Makeyev whether he had already received new commitments for further arms deliveries, Makeyev answered “I don't want to put diplomatic pressure on the federal government, I want to get Germany to deliver what it has faster. Because we don't have time to wait any longer for weapons. A good example of this is the Iris-T anti-aircraft systems. You researched that this has been our top priority since March. Unfortunately, it took many months for Germany to take a leading role in this. Now the first system is in Ukraine, works perfectly and saves many lives.”
He remarked that the Ukrainian military does not have time to wait. More anti-aircraft systems, self-propelled howitzers, Gepards and ammunition are needed on the battlefield. He also negotiates regarding the supply of Marder and Leopard tanks. However, the decision rests with the federal government.
“If we had received anti-aircraft systems or imposed sanctions on Russia before the invasion, the situation would have been different today. The price we are now paying is high. Hundreds of Ukrainian children killed and women raped. Every day there are more. We therefore expect the government to act faster and respond to our specific proposals and requests. I see that there is a positive dynamic here,” Makeyev added.
