Germany equips Ukraine with IRIS-T SLS air defense: specifications
Germany has provided Ukraine with the advanced IRIS-T SLS short-range air defense system. This will significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities
Defense Express explained the main specifications of the system.
The IRIS-T SLS is a notable short-range air defense system that Germany has now provided to Ukraine. This system is particularly remarkable due to its configuration, as all components are integrated onto a single platform: the BvS 10 amphibious tracked vehicle manufactured by BAE Systems.
The key elements of this system consist of four launchers for IRIS-T missiles, which can engage targets up to 10 km in range and 6 km in height. The guidance for these missiles is facilitated by the Giraffe radar, positioned at the vehicle's front. This radar possesses a target detection range of up to 25 km and can track targets up to 10 km high.
Of interest is the unique missile guidance mechanism employed by IRIS-T, combining satellite navigation, an inertial guidance system, target data from radar, and direct infrared GNSS target guidance.
The recent transfer of two IRIS-T SLS launchers from Germany to Ukraine is significant. The German government's plan involves delivering a total of 22 launchers and an undisclosed missile supply, sourced from Bundeswehr stocks and manufactured by German industry under separate orders.
Remarkably, Sweden has been the sole country, with eight units known as RBS98, employing the IRIS-T SLS system as per The Military Balance 2023.
In terms of short-range systems, the German Bundeswehr itself utilizes the Ozelot SAM, mounted on the Wiesel 2 airborne tank chassis. This adaptable system can deploy Stinger or Mistral MANPADS missiles.
