First time since Cold War: Russia deploys ships with nuclear weapons – Norwegian intelligence
For the first time in 30 years, Russian ships have embarked on sea with tactical nuclear weapons on board.
This is stated in the Norwegian intelligence report.
Norway is convinced that this could lead to a lower threshold for nuclear escalation in case of collision between Russia and NATO.
According to the report, during Soviet times, warships of the Northern Fleet regularly went to sea with tactical nuclear weapons, but since the Cold War, no such cases have been recorded.
"The bulk of the nuclear potential is deployed on submarines and surface ships of the Northern Fleet," the intelligence service said in its report. The agency notes that tactical nuclear weapons could pose a particularly serious threat in scenarios of potential confrontation between Russia and NATO.
In October 2022, satellite images were published showed that Russia had deployed strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons - Tu-160 and Tu-95 aircraft - near the border with Norway.
