Estonia proposes including full energy embargo in 8th sanctions package against Russia
Estonia's Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu has highlighted the country's proposal thst the eighth package of EU sanctions against Russia should include a full energy embargo.
This is reported by ERR.
"We need to significantly increase the price of aggression for the aggressor before the onset of winter. Seven packages are still not enough to put pressure on Putin to stop the war against Ukraine," Reinsalu said.
The head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry also said that Estonia's proposals include a full embargo on energy, as well as new sanctions on certain categories of goods and persons excluded from previous packages. Estonia also wants to finally separate Russian banks from the SWIFT banking system. At the same time, Reinsalu added that he will not go into additional details about this yet.
In addition, Estonia will also propose steps to ban Russian citizens from entering the EU.
"More than 10 million citizens of Russia currently have the right to enter the European Union. Someone has to take the first step. I hope that it will be possible to reach some European agreement (in this matter - Ed.)," Reinsalu said.
He also noted that Russia was counting on the fact that Europe would tire of the war in Ukraine.
"It must be said that this hope is futile. We are ready to help Ukraine to such an extent and put pressure on Russia to such an extent that the Russian Federation will be forced to retreat. It is important to show determination and will," Reinsalu emphasized.
