Denmark ready to send F-16 fighters to Ukraine, with US consent
Denmark is open to transferring F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, however, it needs approval for this from the United States, which produces the aircraft
This was stated by Danish Acting Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen, Radio 4 reports.
“Denmark cannot give combat planes to Ukraine alone. We need a group of countries to work together if we want to provide Ukraine with fighter jets and keep them in good shape. We can't do this on our own because we need permission from the United States since the F16 is an American aircraft. But I want to emphasize that we will support Ukraine. Ukraine needs planes more than ever if they want to win,” said Poulsen.
According to Radio 4, a government official recently said something different. They mentioned that Denmark hasn't decided yet whether to give Danish fighter jets or not.
Troels Lund Poulsen mentioned that the Danish government hasn't made a decision about the F-16 fighter jets.
It's worth mentioning that Ukrainian pilots will come to Denmark soon to be trained on how to fly and maintain F-16 planes. The training will happen at the Skrydstrup base in Jutland, which the Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, visited in May.
Denmark and the Netherlands are leading the effort to train Ukrainian pilots. Denmark has a total of 43 F-16 planes, with 30 of them actively serving in the military. However, Denmark is replacing the F-16s with newer F-35 fighter jets.
