Ukraine assesses risk of Belarusian army's sudden inspection near border
Ukraine's State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko says that the sudden inspection of troop readiness announced in Belarus doesn't pose a threat to Ukraine
He said this on the United News telethon.
According to the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service, Belarus has repeatedly conducted either exercises or readiness checks for its troops. Meanwhile, Ukraine's intelligence units are actively monitoring the situation to assess the potential threat to the country.
"But despite everything, even during preliminary checks... we have not recorded any movement of equipment or personnel, including from the Belarusian army units, near our border," Demchenko emphasized.
He added that Russia doesn't currently have forces in Belarus sufficient to invade Ukraine. Earlier, Russia withdrew its units that were in Belarus for exercises, but did not bring in new ones.
However, the spokesperson emphasized that it is necessary to be prepared for any development of the situation, as Russia could deploy its units to Belarus at any time.
"Therefore, this area is also a priority for us and remains a threat, so we are strengthening the entire length of the border with Belarus, from Volyn to Chernihiv. We are reinforcing both the border line and the border area to ensure that all our soldiers, including those of the State Border Guard Service, have every opportunity to repel any attack and counter any threat," Demchenko said.
- On June 21, Belarus launched an inspection of military units prior to their assignment. This will involve training grounds and areas near the borders of Ukraine and Poland.
