UK to strengthen armed forces amid tensions with “deadly quartet”
The United Kingdom has announced that it will strengthen its armed forces to be able to counter threats from China, Iran, North Korea and Russia
Reuters reported the information.
On Tuesday, July 16, the British government instructed George Robertson, former NATO Secretary General, to head a commission to reform the United Kingdom's armed forces, which is to report on the results in the first half of 2025.
"We’re confronted by a deadly quartet of nations increasingly working together, and we in this country, and the NATO alliance that met so successfully last week, have got to be able to confront that particular quartet as well as the other problems," he emphasized.
According to the plans, the reforms are not limited to simple modernization of the armed forces. Its goal is to ensure their combat capability given the level of threat.
The results of the review are expected to be reflected in an increase in defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, which is a promise made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
