NATO Secretary General Jens Stolterberg says the Alliance is currently discussing putting nuclear weapons on alert to deter China and Russia

He said this in an interview with the Telegraph.

According to him, consultations are currently underway among Allies to remove missiles from storage and put them on alert. He called for transparency as a means of deterrence.

“I won’t go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which should be stored, but we need to consult on these issues. That’s exactly what we’re doing,” he said, issuing a stern warning about the threat from China and Russia.

Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of nuclear transparency as the foundation of NATO's nuclear strategy to prepare the Alliance for what he called a more dangerous world.

“Transparency helps to communicate the direct message that we, of course, are a nuclear alliance,” Mr Stoltenberg said. “Nato’s aim is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as nuclear weapons exist, we will remain a nuclear alliance, because a world where Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons, and Nato does not, is a more dangerous world.”

According to the outlet, despite the fact that the actual number of deployed nuclear warheads is classified, the UK has about 40 out of 225, and the US has about 1,700 out of 3,700.

France, as the third nuclear power in NATO, does not make its nuclear arsenal available to the Alliance because of its decision to maintain independence in deterrence.

  • On June 15, NATO Secretary General Jens Stolterberg stated that Ukraine has the right to self-defense, which includes the right to destroy legitimate military targets on Russian territory.
