Russia takes over UN Security Council presidency: potential impact
Russia may use its rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to project power and influence in the international system
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported the information.
According to the report, on July 1, Russia took over the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the first time since April 2023. Analysts suggest that Russia is likely to use this position as a basis for projecting power in the international system, as it has done historically, in particular during its presidency in 2023.
As ISW adds, last year Russia used its presidency of the Security Council to promote several narratives about Russia's desired influence in the international system.
Experts emphasized that Russia is using its veto power in the UN Security Council as a basis for projecting power.
Analysts note that several high-ranking Russian officials have recently launched several information operations designed to absolve themselves of responsibility for Russia's well-documented violations of international law in Ukraine, likely to pave the way for a future presidency of the Security Council.
- Recently, the United States claimed that Russia, by convening a meeting of the UN Security Council, is trying to divert the attention of other states from the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland.
