Netherlands seeks additional Patriot air defense components for Ukraine – Defense Minister Brekelmans
The Netherlands has supplied Ukraine with a radar system as part of the Patriot air defense system and plans to deliver three launchers "very soon." Meanwhile, efforts are underway to secure other necessary components
This was confirmed by the Dutch Defense Minister, Ruben Brekelmans, in an interview with Delfi.
“I can only speak about what we've delivered so far. We've provided the radar system, and soon we will supply three launchers. We're also working to locate additional components to complete the system," Brekelmans said.
He added that several nations are committed to helping Kyiv, saying they’re "doing everything they can, but facing certain challenges, making it difficult to fully assemble the system."
“The reason we’re not always transparent is that we don't want to give information to Russia. If I reveal all the operational details, we risk making Russia more informed than they already are. I don't think that's in our interest,” he explained.
However, Brekelmans also noted that he could not make specific commitments regarding the supply of Patriots to Ukraine.
“I don’t want to make early announcements because it’s only final when it’s done. Right now, many countries are exploring creative options for what they can contribute — perhaps not just Patriots, but also other air defense systems like NASAMS,” he added.
Netherlands' initiative to supply Ukraine with Patriot system
In late May, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Defense launched an initiative to transfer the Patriot system to Ukraine and urged other countries to join in. Along with its allies, the Netherlands sought to gather and deliver this air defense system to Ukraine.
Within a month, then Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren confirmed the decision to transfer the Patriot system, stating that "all the pieces of the puzzle" were coming together.
On September 13, it was reported that the Netherlands had delivered a Patriot radar to Ukraine.
