European Commission reacts to Orban's 'peace plan' for Ukraine 'on every EU prime minister's desk'
Balázs Orbán, Political Director for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, stated that his 'peace plan' for Russia's war against Ukraine "is on the desk of every EU prime minister." At the same time, the European Commission said it would check for such a letter
He made this claim in an interview with Magyar Nemzet.
According to Balázs Orbán, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán briefed European leaders on his "peacekeeping mission" after visiting Ukraine, Russia, and China. He emphasized that the "peace plan" for Ukraine "is on the table of every EU prime minister."
Balázs Orbán noted that after the Prime Minister's trips to Kyiv and Moscow, it "became clear" that both parties "are determined to fight." He warned that without intervention from external mediators, "we will see brutal destruction in the coming months."
He added that Budapest has started negotiations with potential mediators, including Turkey, China, and US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
"But the Europeans and the current US administration support continuing the war. The Prime Minister wrote to EU leaders about the negotiations, the initial outcomes of the peacekeeping mission, and Hungarian proposals. If Europe wants peace and a decisive voice in ending the war and stopping the bloodshed, it must now develop and implement a change of direction," Orbán said.
He believes Hungary's role as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia should not be underestimated. He asserted that Budapest can play a "serious role in mediation."
"Hungary is a capable mediator, as the last two weeks have shown, and our task now is to combine this new approach and try to convince EU member states of Viktor Orbán's plan," said the political director.
The European Commission's reaction
At a briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said that it should be checked whether the letter from the Hungarian prime minister had been received, reports European Pravda.
"We will need to check whether we have received this letter. It's not for me to speculate on who exactly he was addressing when Mr Orban said he had sent a letter to EU leaders," he said.
Mamer also stressed that the President of the European Commission is a full member of the European Council. Therefore, these reports about the letters will be checked, and the results will be announced later.
