NATO plans security package for Ukraine to bolster membership bid – US Ambassador to NATO
During this summer's annual summit in Washington, NATO plans to offer Ukraine a security package to serve as a "bridge" to membership
US Ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, reported this, according to Defense News.
"Allies will be putting forward a whole package of deliverables that will serve as a bridge to their membership inside the alliance. Part of the package will be the language we use to describe Ukraine’s membership aspirations in the declaration itself," Smith said.
She also noted that this package would formalize some bilateral support currently provided to Ukraine and bring it under NATO's command.
Additionally, 32 countries are finalizing bilateral agreements to support Ukraine before the summit, with 13 agreements already concluded.
The NATO Washington Summit, set for July 9-11, will mark the Alliance's 75th anniversary, established on April 4, 1949, by the North Atlantic Treaty.
- Previously, Smith stated that the Washington summit declaration would include "new language" regarding Ukraine's path to NATO membership.
