Ukrainian government establishes National Commission on Crimean Tatar language
The Ukrainian government has established the National Commission for the Crimean Tatar Language. It will be co-chaired by Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk
The relevant decision was made by the Cabinet of Ministers at a meeting on January 6.
"The Commission was established to implement the Strategy for the Crimean Tatar language’s Development for 2022-2032. This consultative and advisory body will consist of representatives of the involved state bodies, the Crimean Tatars’ Mejlis and linguists from scientific and educational institutions," the statement reads.
Particularly, the main task of the National Commission is to preserve the Crimean Tatar language, which is classified by UNESCO as one of the languages in need of protection, and to promote coordination of central and local executive authorities’ actions on institutional, organizational and informational support for the functioning of the Crimean Tatar language.
Also, Vereshchuk claims: "The Crimean Tatar language is one of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, which is currently subject to harassment and repression in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Ukrainian authorities are doing everything to protect the rights of Crimean Tatars and their national identity."
"The commission established today aims to promote the preservation of national culture, traditions, customs and historical memory of the Crimean Tatar people. Together with scientists we must popularize this language among young people and raise its prestige. We must preserve our common national memory," the Vice Prime Minister stressed.
