Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise (Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise) said this in an interview with Evening Kyiv.

Ruvin explained why this missile does not meet the tactical and technical characteristics declared by Russia:

  • First, the 3M22 Zircon anti-ship missile does not fly at Mach 8-9 (about 10,000 kilometers per hour). According to the relevant services, the missile only reaches 2,500 kilometers per hour in the final stretch of flight.
  • Second, there are serious doubts about its accuracy. The missiles were hit by air defense and did not reach their targets. Civilian infrastructure was damaged and civilians injured.
  • Third, the researchers did not see the destructive power that an anti-ship missile with almost 400 kilograms of explosives should have.

According to Ruvin, the missile was developed primarily as a weapon against aircraft carriers, which are very difficult to sink. But it is unlikely that this missile will cope with its intended purpose.

What preceded it

On the morning of February 7, Russia launched cruise missiles and attack drones at Ukraine. There were hits in different regions, and people were killed. On the morning of February 7, Russian troops attacked Kyiv and the region: four people were killed in the enemy attack, at least 40 were injured in the Holosiivskyi district and three in the Dniprovskyi district. Among them is a pregnant woman. A heating main and two high-voltage lines were damaged in the capital, leaving 355 residential buildings without heating.

The Russian Federation launched 64 airborne targets and spent at least USD 423 million during a massive attack on Ukraine on February 7.

The Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise has preliminarily established that on February 7, Russia attacked Ukraine with a 3M22 Zircon anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile.

Russia used its Zircon hypersonic missile system during the attack on Ukraine on February 7. In this way, Russia is trying to demonstrate its capabilities.
