UK has retired over 1,000 vehicles and aircraft: what could be useful for Ukraine?
Majority of these equipment were sold as scrap metal at auctions, while the rest of the machines were either sold under direct contracts to private companies and foreign governments or their status is currently unknown
Defense Express writes that in the past two years, the British government has decommissioned all-terrain vehicles, armored vehicles, and trailers, some of which are already in use by the Ukrainian Armed Forces or could have been beneficial. This raises concerns, especially considering our military's resorting to purchasing German Wiesel tracked vehicles, weighing 3 tons each, due to a shortage of equipment.
Notably, the disposal included components for Challenger and Challenger 2 tanks, indicating a utilization of resources that could potentially have found more practical applications. This decision has drawn attention, alongside the sale for scrap of 667 vehicles and trailers that might have served a more purposeful role.
Even if we assume that some of the decommissioned British equipment eventually found its way to the Ukrainian Armed Forces through volunteer efforts or other purchases, it would have been far more beneficial to directly transfer such technology to our military. Direct allocation could have streamlined the process and ensured more effective support for Ukrainian forces.
"As for the 48 aircraft decommissioned or sold by the British in the last two years, there are nuances to consider. Among the aircraft listed, only the E-3 Sentry seems to have practical and real value for the Ukrainian military. The reported sale of 5 E-3 Sentry aircraft contrasts with The Military Balance 2021, which indicated only three such aircraft in active service with the Royal Air Force (presumably, the other two could have been sold as spare parts donors).
However, it's evident that these were fully operational aircraft, as the British sold three E-3 Sentry aircraft to Chile in 2022. This is noteworthy, especially considering that British media themselves reported on the need for AWACS-class aircraft deliveries to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
