Ukraine's mobilization needs quality, not just quantity - Colonel Kostenko
Colonel of Ukraine's Security Service Roman Kostenko says that if the pace of mobilization keeps up with June-July, by late 2024 the Ukrainian army will be fully combat ready in quantitative terms
He said this on Espreso TV.
"All mobilisation figures in any country are secret. I would like to say that at the moment, starting from 18 May, when the law was adopted, the rate of mobilisation has increased significantly. In May-June, we recruited more people than in the previous few months, when the pace of mobilisation had slowed down. Even the military are now saying that if the rate does not drop, as it did in May-July, we may have more than 80% of our brigades manned by the end of the year, which means the army is fully combat ready," the colonel said.
According to him, however, quantity does not mean quality, so the big question in training centers is quality, because Ukrainian territorial recruitment centers are somewhere underperforming, chasing the number of personnel.
“And then we get people who either didn't pass the commission or are simply not taken away from the training centers because they are physically unable to perform certain tasks. Many brigades cannot afford to recruit people on their own, so they take those provided by the territorial recruitment center, and this is a problem. We also need quantity, but if we lose quality or reduce it to nothing, the quantity will be of no use,” summarized Kostenko.
