Voice of America reported this, citing Trump's statement on February 12 at a White House press conference.
Trump said he agreed with Russian leader Putin to start talks to end the war in Ukraine.
He said that they would continue their efforts for as long as necessary to prevent anything else from happening, but added that President Putin currently "wanted peace."
He also made it clear that despite talks with the Kremlin, he would continue supporting Ukraine, or else "Putin would say he won."
- Trump had his first phone call with Putin after being re-elected. He also announced upcoming visits – Putin to the U.S. and himself to Russia.
