This year, the Swedish government's top foreign policy priority is supporting Ukraine. Other key issues include security cooperation, gender equality, and expanding women's rights

This was stated by Sweden's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard.

She noted that this year's foreign policy declaration is presented at a difficult time in terms of security policy.

"We – Sweden, the EU, and NATO – are in a long-term and far-reaching confrontation with Russia. Russia will continue to pose a serious threat to security in Europe, regardless of the outcome of the war in Ukraine. Our task is clear: we must counter Russia’s ability to harm us, not least by supporting Ukraine," said Stenergard.

In the statement, the head of Sweden's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that supporting Ukraine is the government's main foreign policy task. Specifically, Sweden is increasing its support to Ukraine, and the total support since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion amounts to approximately 70 billion Swedish kronor.

"For Sweden, supporting Ukraine is not just a moral obligation but also an investment in the security, independence, and freedom of Europe, as well as our own," Stenergard stressed.

She also emphasized that Sweden will continue to build security together with others, particularly as a member of the EU and NATO.

  • Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, commented on the Alliance's position regarding military assistance to Ukraine amid possible funding cuts from the U.S.
