Kursk governor fires Sudzha district head amid refugee protest: Locals demand war recognition
Kursk region governor Alexey Smirnov dismissed Sudzha district head Alexander Bogachev during a meeting with refugees, following a protest where residents demanded recognition of the ongoing war in the region
The information comes from Meduza, citing Russian media and Telegram channels.
At the meeting’s start, Sudzha district residents called for Bogachev’s dismissal. The governor responded by promising to fulfill the demand, and the announcement of Bogachev’s firing was met with applause.
Alexander Bogachev commented on his dismissal, describing it as a move to “find a scapegoat.”
“Someone always has to be a scapegoat. Sadly, that’s just how things work here,” the former district head told RTVI.
Background
On Sunday, November 10, refugees from Sudzha gathered near Kursk’s city administration to rally over unpaid compensation for destroyed homes and steep rental costs.
Anatoly Drogan, a regional administration official and head of local government liaison, addressed the refugees, declaring the rally illegal and demanding to “identify the group leaders.”
Later, another official appeared, promising a meeting with the governor. A similar rally took place in Kursk a few weeks earlier, with locals protesting their inability to find affordable housing. Officials and police showed up, banned filming of the scene, and assured the crowd that support measures would be considered.
