Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during a briefing with Moldova's President Maia Sandu, reported by RBC-Ukraine, that Ukraine will supply coal for Moldova's energy sector.

Zelenskyy emphasized that this cooperation would ensure the entire country of Moldova receives electricity, with the potential to reduce electricity prices by 30% thanks to Ukrainian coal and exports.

"We're providing them with coal, and we're open to discussing a low price, even offering it for free if we can receive electricity in return," Zelenskyy declared.

This initiative also aims to overcome Russia's artificial energy blockade of Transnistria.

Zelenskyy and Sandu also made a joint statement affirming mutual support, readiness for cooperation in various sectors, and condemned Russia's war against Ukraine.

Earlier, Sandu shared on social media that she arrived in Kyiv on Saturday, January 25, for talks with Zelenskyy. "Today in Kyiv for negotiations with President Zelenskyy. I send my support to Ukraine and its people. Their bravery ensures our peace," Sandu emphasized.

According to her, the leaders will discuss security, energy, infrastructure, trade, and mutual support on the path to EU membership. "Moldova remains a reliable neighbor," added the Moldovan leader.

The website of the Moldovan presidency also mentioned that Sandu will meet with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Speaker of Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk.

An important item on the agenda will be the energy crisis caused by Russia, which has raised energy prices on the right bank of the Dniester, leaving residents on the left bank without heat and electricity, and potentially affecting regional security, according to the press service.

Sandu will also participate in a discussion at the New Europe Center in Kyiv, a research center focused on foreign policy and security.

"The visit of the head of state today highlights the close relations between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the shared commitment to peace and security, and solidarity in the face of regional challenges," the Moldovan presidency concluded.

  • Referring to Slovakia's threats, Polish Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska declared readiness to increase electricity supplies to Ukraine.
