How many drones actually attacked Russia's Ryazan?
Oleh Katkov, a military expert and the chief editor of Defense Express, noted that a limited number of Ukrainian drones caused a hellish night in Ryazan late on January 23, showcasing the state of Russia's air defense systems
He shared this on Espreso TV.
"The Ryazan oil refinery is among the top 5 in terms of petroleum processing capacity, with a design capacity of 15 million tons. This refinery has been under attack before; it’s been hit since 2023, and even last year. The important thing is to keep attacking because the Russians repair the damage. It's essential to understand that repairing such refineries is time-consuming and very expensive.
Another point – there’s interesting information, though the source is questionable as it comes directly from Russian authorities, the Russian Ministry of Defense, and local collaborators in Ryazan, who provided very interesting figures about how many drones were used. Overall, the Russian Ministry of Defense claims that 120 drones were shot down in the attack on Russia on January 23, with only 20 in Ryazan region. Local authorities say that 12 UAVs attacked the refinery," said the chief editor of Defense Express.
According to him, such a massive explosion, which was clearly visible in videos from residents of Ryazan, was carried out by a limited number of UAVs. It’s worth noting that Ryazan is located in a central industrial region of Russia, and this refinery is an important strategic facility.
Additionally, Ryazan hosts the Dyagilevo airbase, an aviation repair plant, and a well-known military school, indicating that Ryazan should be well protected by air defense systems.
"But 12 Ukrainian long-range drones can cause a hellish night in Ryazan. And this shows the state of the Russian air defense systems. Therefore, by increasing the production of Ukrainian long-range drones, we will more frequently learn about new explosions, and it also involves concentrating strikes on specific Russian targets," summed up Oleh Katkov.
