Process of Sweden's accession to NATO is temporarily suspended
Against the background of events of recent weeks, Sweden is forced to make a temporary pause in the process of the country's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Sweden Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tobias Billström, stated this in the Expressen newspaper.
"Events of the last few weeks have temporarily put the process on hold," Billström said, adding that the Swedish government is now putting effort and time into trying to move things along.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ministry made a lot of efforts to soften Turkey's indignation at the protests in Stockholm. However, it will take time.

On January 21, protest actions were held in Stockholm, which may complicate the country's efforts to convince Turkey to approve joining NATO. During the protests, the Quran was burned, and the Turkish Foreign Ministry demands that Sweden investigate this case.

Finland's foreign minister has hinted that Russia may be involved in Quran-burning protest that threatens to derail Sweden's entry into NATO.

However, Finland expects to join NATO alliance with Sweden before the next NATO summit in July 2023 in Vilnius.
