Kherson Art Museum identifies more than 100 paintings stolen by Russia
The Kherson Art Museum has identified 103 paintings stolen by Russian occupation forces in 2022. The total number of illegally smuggled artworks exceeds 10, 000
This was reported by the museum's press service.
In particular, two paintings have recently been identified. It is noted that they were shown by Russian propagandists who filmed a story in the Central Museum of Tavrida.
Samuel Nevelstein (1903-1983). Sketch for the painting "History Lesson". 1965-66. Oil on canvas.
"This artist and teacher is a representative of the Leningrad school of painting, but he was born in Kherson. At the age of 20, he left his hometown to get an art education - first in Moscow, and then in Leningrad, where the artist remained for the rest of his life," the museum workers said.
It is noted that Samuel Nevelstein painted still lives, landscapes, portraits, including many women and children. In the late 1980s, the museum received a large collection of paintings and drawings by his countryman, most of which were donated to the city by the artist's widow.
At the same time, the Russians saw the artist's paintings as " feats of Soviet citizens".
Ivan Loboda (1926-2017). Embroiderer. 1971. Oil on canvas.
It is noted that 102 of the stolen paintings are in the temporarily occupied Crimea, the whereabouts of another are unknown, but there is confirmation from Russians that the masterpiece is in their hands.
