Kyiv is bargaining with NATO
Kyiv and Brussels are haggling over the final decisions of the July NATO summit. That is why Zelenskyy has not yet confirmed his participation in the summit
Ukraine has been publicly denied an accelerated membership procedure. Therefore, Kyiv hopes to receive an invitation at least under the traditional procedure... Here we have the support of the Baltic countries, as well as the Czechs and Poles.
It is important for Ukraine to find a common denominator with NATO regarding the so-called security guarantees. The Alliance understands them to mean further arms supplies to Ukraine, as well as investments in the development of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, while Kyiv expects greater participation of its partners in the country's post-war security – until it joins the Alliance.
NATO offers us so-called comprehensive support, and we are seeking membership in the organization: what is the difference?
The difference is in the famous Article 5 of the Alliance's treaty: an attack on one of the states means an attack on the entire organization.
The reasons for the refusal are different. We can talk about an open armed conflict on the territory of Ukraine. Or, for example, NATO has not yet removed the thorn in its political side called "pro-Russian Hungarian Prime Minister Orban." Despite its triviality, this "thorn" blocks all pro-Ukrainian decisions of the organisation.
We are offered "comprehensive support" until the end of the war: "Over the past year, allies have provided Ukraine with unprecedented military support worth €65 billion. And this will continue. NATO will support Ukraine for as long as it takes," says Stoltenberg.
Objectively speaking, Ukraine is already part of the Alliance's security space and has achieved a high level of interoperability with partner armies. Both Reznikov and Stoltenberg spoke about this.
“Objectively speaking, Ukraine is already part of the Alliance's security space and has achieved a high level of interoperability with partner armies. Both Reznikov and Stoltenberg spoke about this.”
Another thing is that the Alliance has long since turned from a security organization into a security club that is not up to the task of meeting the challenges of our time. Moreover, Ukraine receives military support not from the Alliance, but from individual states.
Ukraine may be interested in Boris Johnson's long-standing idea to create a military-defense alliance of Britain, the Baltic states, the Czechs, Poles, and, of course, Ukrainians. The United Kingdom is looking for ways to become a regional leader, and uniting proactive European countries is a good chance to do so. Such military cooperation would really remove all questions of guarantees for Ukraine.
However, it is necessary to join NATO... At least to have the membership in this organisation as a powerful slap in the face for the bunker dictator and the whole Russia with their imperialism.
