European Commission to announce Ukraine's readiness for EU membership talks in 2 weeks
The European Commission's conclusion on Ukraine's full readiness to start official negotiations on EU membership will be made public three and a half months earlier than planned - at the EU summit on December 14-15
Vice President of the European Commission, Czech politician Věra Jourová said this in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, which was published on December 2, 2023.
"We will not wait until March. When the European Commission made this proposal in November, it was believed that Kyiv would need a few more months to meet the criteria set by 27 countries," she said.
However, Jourova stressed that what she personally saw during her recent visit to Ukraine allows her to shorten the preparatory phase.
"I have just returned from Kyiv. From what I have seen, it is certainly clear that there is still work to be done in the fight against corruption or the protection of national minorities, but Ukraine is determined and will be ready by mid-December. In two weeks, the Commission will inform European leaders that Ukraine has fulfilled all the conditions for the immediate start of accession negotiations," the Vice President of the European Commission explained.
- On November 28, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament publicly called on the European Council to confirm the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
