Energy Research Center explains Ukraine’s gas transmission future after Russian transit ends
Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director of the Energy Research Center, stated that part of Ukraine's natural gas transmission system will remain operational, supporting gas supply to both European countries and Ukraine
He shared this information during an interview on Espreso TV.
"Some sections of Ukraine's gas transportation system will continue working in injection and extraction mode for European countries. Ukraine has multiple connections with Europe through gas pipelines, which makes it possible for our storage facilities to inject gas in the summer and supply it during the winter. This system plays a key role in European energy security," Kharchenko said.
He also mentioned that several American businessmen are ready to utilize liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Greece, Poland, and Spain to store gas in Ukraine during the summer. In the winter, when gas prices rise, this stored gas will be sold.
"In other words, parts of the gas transmission system will stay functional without any major issues. However, regarding the main pipeline running from our eastern border to Europe, we’ll preserve it for now and monitor how the situation evolves," Kharchenko added.
- On December 21, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine would cease the transit of Russian gas across its territory starting January 1.
