"Everything is much more terrible": Steinmeier shares his impressions after Ukraine trip
After a trip to Ukraine, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that the situation is much more dire than people imagine in Germany, and there is still no hope for peace talks
This is reported by the German Tagesschau TV channel with reference to Steinmeier's statement.
“Everything is much more terrible than we imagine in Germany,” he was quoted as saying after the trip to Ukraine.
Thenews service says that the German president was shocked by the destruction and the stories of Ukrainians who survived the occupation. In his opinion, negotiations with Russia are now impossible, because Russia wants to maintain control over the occupied territories.
“Of course, anyone who can think and has compassion, wants an end to hostilities. But a ceasefire means that the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be preserved. We are not at that stage now,” the German president emphasized.
