EU strengthens sanctions against Iran
The EU Council has adopted a resolution on strengthening sanctions against Iran in connection with human rights violations and included in the sanctions list additional 29 officials who were involved in the brutal suppression of demonstrations in defense of the Iranian women rights
This was reported on Monday, November 14, on the website of the European Council.
“The Council today added 29 individuals and three entities to the list of those subject to restrictive measures in the context of the existing Iran human rights sanctions regime. This is in view of their role in the death of Mahsa Amini and the violent response to the recent demonstrations in Iran,” the message says.
It is known that the list includes representatives of law enforcement agencies that were involved in the arbitrary arrest of Mahsa Amini, heads of local law enforcement agencies, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and representatives of the military leadership that led the brutal suppression of peaceful protests in Iran.
In addition, the sanctions extend against the heads of Iran's state television, which disseminated the "confessions" of protest participants, as well as the head of Iran's so-called cyber police, who was involved in the arrests of people for criticizing the Iranian regime online.
The mentioned measures include the freezing of financial assets and a ban on travel to the EU. EU citizens and organizations are prohibited from providing any financial resources to individuals and institutions included in the sanctioned list. The sanctions regime also prohibits the export to Iran of any equipment that could be used for internal repression or control of the telecommunications space.
Currently, the list of Iranian individuals and institutions subject to EU sanctions for human rights violations includes 126 individuals and 11 institutions.
