The English translation of the Winter King selection by Ukrainian poet and translator Ostap Slyvynsky has been shortlisted for the Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry 2024

The poetry selection Winter King by Ukrainian author Ostap Slyvynsky was published in English by Lost Horse Press and translated by Vitaly Chernetsky and Iryna Shuvalova. The selection has now been shortlisted for the Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry.

The Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry is presented annually by Arrowsmith Press in partnership with the Derek Walcott Festival and the Boston Playwrights' Theater. The prize recognizes a selection of poetry published in the past year by a living poet who is not a U.S. citizen. Selections in English or in English translation are eligible for the prize.

The winner will be announced on October 15 during the fall presentation of the book by Sven Birkerts, Glyn Maxwell, and Gjertrud Schnackenberg. In 2021, the Derek Walcott Prize was awarded to Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan.

Ostap Slyvynsky is a poet, translator, and literary critic. He translates fiction and nonfiction from English, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Polish, and Russian. His own works - poetry and essays - have been translated into English, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Galician, German, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Portuguese.
