Ukraine aid is "most urgent task" at Washington's NATO Summit, Stoltenberg says
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that support for Ukraine will be the most pressing issue at the NATO summit in Washington
The NATO website reports on July 5.
“I expect heads of state and government will agree a substantial package for Ukraine. NATO will take over the coordination and provision of most international security assistance,” said Stoltenberg.
He added that the Allies will commit to financial support for Ukraine. Stoltenberg anticipates increased immediate military assistance, more bilateral security agreements, and efforts to enhance military interoperability.
Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that all these elements "constitute a pathway to NATO membership and represent a robust package for Ukraine at the summit," while affirming that "Ukraine is drawing closer to membership in the Alliance."
He also noted that deterrence and defense would be other key topics at the summit.
