What concessions Trump's 'peace' plan envisages for Ukraine: details
Former President Donald Trump has privately shared his vision of a peaceful end to Russia's war in Ukraine, according to which Ukraine would have to cede some territory
The Washington Post reports this.
Trump's idea is to push Ukraine to hand over Crimea and the Donbas border region to Russia.
According to some foreign policy experts, this plan would reward Russian leader Vladimir Putin and condone the violation of internationally recognized borders by force.
In private conversations, Trump has said that he believes both Russia and Ukraine want to save face, want to find a way out, and that people in some parts of Ukraine would not mind being part of Russia.
Some of Trump's supporters are trying to convince him not to allow this to happen, as recognizing Russian control over parts of Ukraine would expand the scope of Putin's dictatorship.
"I spend 100% of my time talking to Trump about Ukraine," said Senator Lindsey Graham. "He has to pay a price. He will not be able to win.”
According to Emma Ashford, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, a nonpartisan think tank, a trade of territory for a ceasefire would leave Ukraine in a worse position without guarantees that Russia will not rearm and resume hostilities.
"It's a terrible deal," she said of Trump's proposal.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt responded to rumors about the former president's peace plan, saying they come from unnamed and uninformed sources who have no idea what's going on or what's going to happen.
"President Trump is the only one talking about ending the killings," she added.
- On March 18, former US President Donald Trump said that he hoped he would not have to decide whether to continue to help Ukraine with weapons or allow Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to occupy part or all of Ukraine if he were to be re-elected president.
