Rheinmetall gets order from EU country for hundreds of thousands of Skynex air defense munitions
German defense concern Rheinmetall has received an order from an unnamed European country for hundreds of thousands of munitions for the Skynex air defense system
The company's website reports.
“A European customer country has commissioned Rheinmetall to supply 35mm AHEAD ammunition for the Skynex air defence system…The Skynex system strengthens the protection of the customer country's armed forces against threats from the air,” the statement said.
It is noted that the contract is worth several hundred million euros. A six-figure number of shells will be produced.
The company did not name a specific country that will receive the ammunition.
Rheinmetall noted that Skynex is based on a gun-based air defense system and is therefore particularly suitable for close-range defense where guided missiles cannot be effective. In addition, the use of programmable munitions is much cheaper than similar systems based on guided missiles. Once fired, 35-mm shells cannot be affected even by electronic warfare.

- At the end of January, Rheinmetall Italia CEO Alessandro Ercolan said that the first battery of Skynex air defense systems would be delivered to Ukraine at the end of 2023, but Defense Express called the news unexpected because it did not coincide with the delivery plans.
