The New Mexico Prosecutor's Office has responded to a motion filed by the lawyers of American actor Alec Baldwin in the case of the unintentional killing of Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust, who had previously asked the judge to drop the charges against the actor.
In a public statement released on April 8, New Mexico prosecutors said that Baldwin, 66, was inattentive during firearms training and "frequently yelled and cursed" on the set of the 2021 western before the incident that killed cameraman Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
"To observe Baldwin's behavior on the set of Rust is to witness a man with absolutely no control over his own emotions and absolutely no concern for how his behavior affects others. Witnesses emphasize that it was this behavior that contributed to the safety compromises on the set," wrote Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis.
The prosecutors also noted that they had "endured almost countless lies and manipulations by the defense" and were "the target of the defendant's contrived and unfounded personal attacks."
The prosecutor's office provided this document in response to a motion filed by Baldwin's legal team in March, which demanded that the charges against him be dropped, instead claiming that prosecutors had violated “almost every possible rule.”
Gunsmith Anna Gutierrez-Reed, who loaded a gun for actor Alec Baldwin before he fired and killed Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin's trial in this case will begin on July 9.
Case against Alec Baldwin on charges of murdering Halyna Hutchins
In October 2021, 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded by a shot fired by Baldwin during the filming of the western Rust at Bonanza Creek Ranch. The actor was supposed to fire a blank. The woman was hospitalized, but her life could not be saved. Filming of the movie was suspended.
In September 2022, the prosecutor named Alec Baldwin as one of four "possible defendants." In late January, Alec Baldwin was charged with the murder of a Ukrainian woman and faced up to 5 years in prison.
Later, Baldwin demanded that the prosecutor be removed "due to a conflict of interest." In early February 2023, the parents of the murdered Halyna Hutchins also filed a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin.
On February 21, 2023, prosecutors reduced the involuntary manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin, reducing the possible prison sentence the Hollywood star could face for the fatal shooting. And on April 20, 2023, he was acquitted of charges of murdering a cameraman of Ukrainian origin.
