Google Maps releases satellite images of Ukrainian military systems, claims they are outdated
Google has released updated satellite images showing the location of Ukrainian military systems, but the company claims the images are outdated
The incident was reported on November 3 by Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation.
"Imagine this: Google posts updated images showing the location of our military systems (I won't go into specifics)," he wrote on Telegram.
According to Kovalenko, Ukraine reached out to Google to address the issue, as Russian groups had already started spreading the images.
Later that day, Kovalenko said Google representatives contacted Ukrainian officials after the public outcry. The company assured them they were working to fix the issue with the images of Ukrainian military systems.
"In the future, we’ll also discuss how to address such problems quickly," Kovalenko added.
On November 5, Google’s press service told European Pravda that the images were outdated and came from publicly available sources.
“These satellite images were taken more than a year ago and are from publicly available sources. We do not release the latest images of war zones. We take these requests seriously and are in constant contact with Ukrainian officials," the statement said.
