War continues: EU ambassador on the future for Ukrainian refugees in Europe
EU labor markets are ready to absorb Ukrainian refugees, most of whom have already found work, but European politicians understand that these people are needed at home.
Matti Maasikas, the head of the EU Representation in Ukraine, told it in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"Most people want to return to Ukraine, and I would like that, because Ukraine needs these people - but they don't know when. Many have already returned. September 1, the beginning of the school year, was a defining moment. Many Ukrainian mothers still enroll their children in Ukrainian education, even from abroad" - the European diplomat said.
He noted that Ukrainians are very hardworking, and in emigration they want to start working as soon as possible:
"Wherever there are Ukrainian refugees (especially in my home country, Estonia, where they make up 4% of the population), they want to start working as soon as possible. Always the first generation of migrants, as a rule, work a step below their educational and qualification level , unfortunately, mainly because of the language and cultural aspects. But a lot of them have found work."
EU countries will help refugees from Ukraine as long as the war continues and they would gladly integrate them into their labor market, but there is a clear understanding that their homeland needs them:
"There is no pan-European policy on whether to start the integration of Ukrainian refugees. But I am fully convinced that the general mood in European societies and authorities was very hospitable to them. I will not list all types of assistance that Ukrainians receive automatically.
There is a general understanding that the war is on and they, or most of them, cannot return. And the fact that Ukraine needs these people. I don't think that any of the EU member states have a policy to integrate these people faster, because their labor markets need it. Understanding your situation remains very stable."
