Ukraine’s long-range drone attacks become more intense: what does strike on Russian base in Novoozerne indicate?
Long-range ‘kamikaze’ drones, or rather loitering munitions, have no remarkable features for breaking through air defense, except that they can overwhelm it with their numbers
On the night of August 12, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the 943rd Mobilization Deployment Support Centre of the Russian Army (974th MDSC), which is located in the still-occupied Crimea near the village of Novoozerne, Defense Express reports.
Videos of Russia's air defense systems were filmed by local residents, showing the launch of anti-aircraft missiles.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also reported, in its traditional manner, that a total of 20 drones were used in the attack, of which 14 were shot down and another six were "suppressed by electronic warfare". Of course, as the Russians declare, there were no casualties or damage.
In the Russian Federation, the phrase "suppressed by electronic warfare" refers to the so-called "Newspeak" (an allusion to a fictional language of a totalitarian superstate in a George Orwell’s novel - ed.). This phrase is from the same series as “bang” (refusing to use the word “explosion” Russian propaganda uses “bang” instead – ed.).
This is how the strikes on ground targets by Ukrainian drones, starting with the Rublevka strike, and all the strikes on government buildings in the Russian capital, were described.
However, if we take into account that 20 ‘kamikaze’ drones were indeed used in the attack, we can conclude that the strikes themselves are becoming intense. And this is indeed one of the few factors that makes the use of loitering munitions effective.
The fact is that such weapons do not have unique characteristics that guarantee overcoming air defenses, but they are cheap and mass-produced. And this factor makes it possible to use a significant number of drones to strike a single object. Because each air defense system has a limit in the form of channel capacity - the number of targets it can simultaneously fire at. It overwhelms enemy air defense systems and allows us to hit designated targets.
