Ukraine restores second backup power line to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and safely shut down the reactor - IAEA
Ukraine has restored the second backup power line to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) but four main external lines remain out of action.
The IAEA reports.
"The second backup power line to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZAEP) was restored, which allows to supply the power plant with external electricity necessary for cooling the reactor and other important safety functions. And keep the other line is in reserve," the Agency reports.
Another case important to nuclear safety at Europe's largest nuclear power plant: the reactor unit that was shut down has now gone into cold shutdown mode, along with the site's five other reactors. This means that it will need less energy to cool.
"Now the restored 750/330 kV line is used to provide safety functions, and the previously restored 330 kV line remains in reserve. Both restored lines can receive energy from the grid through the distribution point of the nearby thermal power plant," the IAEA said in a statement.
At the same time, Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, emphasized that the situation with nuclear safety and security at the station, located in the war zone, remains unstable.
"A nuclear safety zone is urgently needed, and I have started consultations with the relevant parties," the Director General emphasized at the IAEA Board of Governors.
