Ukraine will become 33rd or 34th NATO member one day - Secretary General Rutte
During a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Ukraine would “one day” join the coalition as the 33rd or 34th member
European Pravda reports.
It is noted that Rutte refrained from saying whether the Allies have become more favorable to the proposal to invite Ukraine to NATO after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially revealed the details of the Victory Plan.
“At the moment, it looks like Ukraine will be the 33rd member. But maybe someone else will emerge before them. But Ukraine will be a member of NATO in the future, that is what we decided in Washington. The question is the timeline,” the NATO Secretary General said.
Rutte emphasized that the allies are currently focused on efforts to build a bridge to Ukraine's membership.
“So if there is a specific question “When?”, I cannot answer it now, at this moment. But we are working on all of these areas so that they can actually become a NATO member one day,” the Secretary General added.
US Ambassador to NATO Julian Smith said during a briefing before the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels that NATO has no plans to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance in the near future.
