Two volunteer medics from Norway get wounded in Bakhmut
Two Norwegian medical volunteers, Sander Sørsven Trelvik and Simon Jonsen, were injured during the shelling of the Bakhmut city in Donetsk region on Thursday
Their relatives and Jonsen himself told VG about this in a commentary.
According to Jonsen, he and Trelvik were tasked to evacuate several people who had been injured in the shelling on Thursday morning. After the medics arrived at the location, Russian troops opened fire on them.
"They bombed the same place twice. Then they started (shelling) the area when they saw that we survived," the volunteer said, adding that several other people who were with him and Trelvik were killed.
Trelvik's mother said that he suffered burns over 30-40% of his body and shrapnel wounds, but his internal organs remained intact. He and Jonsen were sent to a hospital in Dnipro for treatment.
The woman added that the Norwegian authorities are preparing to evacuate the wounded through Poland to their homeland.
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told VG that they were aware of the situation, but declined to elaborate.
Bakhmut, which has been under constant attack by mercenaries of the private military company Wagner, has been one of the hottest spots on the frontline for the past few months. Russia claims to have taken the town into an operational cordon, which the Ukrainian side denies.
